![]() ![]() Naturally, you don’t really go into towns anymore and the sidequests dry up. After this section, though, the game completely shifts gears and you’re told to go collect four MacGuffins from the season temples. These places are large and packed with NPCs that offer sidequests, although most of those NPCs stand motionlessly. The first couple of hours see Ary traveling to various settlements in order to move the story forward. The structure of Ary and the Secret of Seasons is similarly uneven. It’s way too heavy for this game’s tone and the characters just forget about it. At best he just knew it and did nothing to stop it. ![]() ![]() At one point, you learn that a major character is at worst possibly responsible for children being abducted and forced into slavery. Certain major plot developments show up and then are never spoken of again. Despite that, the story is oddly-paced and the enemy threat is ill-defined and not very threatening at all. They’re not overly long but I enjoyed them when they came around, as they have a very Saturday morning cartoon feel to them. The cutscenes are well-animated and have strong voice acting. As such, he’s in no shape to go meet with the others and Ary goes in his stead. Her father, the guardian of Winter, is wracked with despair after Ary’s older brother Flynn goes missing. The seasons are out of whack due to some strange goings-on and the local guardians are set to convene. However, it simply didn’t get far enough into development to get there.Īry and the Secret of Seasons tells the story of Aryelle as she fights to restore order and balance to the world around her. With more time and polish, this could be a good game. If I didn’t know that I’d played the launch build, I’d assume it was an alpha. The game simply isn’t even close to ready for launch. A lot of love and talent clearly went into making the game and it can be a good amount of fun a lot of the time. Ary and the Secret of Seasons has a large, colorful game world that aims to occupy the same space as the Zelda games. Many of these can only be fixed with a restart.I love ambitious games made by smaller teams. Ary clips into the scenery and can’t be rescued. Waypoints, or even the entire overworld map, disappear. Button inputs aren’t recognised or are delayed. Broken linksĪnd that’s not the only glitch – in fact, Ary and the Secret of Seasons is riddled with bugs and issues. It would be fun, if the game didn’t glitch out repeatedly, forcing me to restart the entire battle more than once. One example against a birdlike creature is more inventive and gives the game a Shadow of the Colossus-stye moment with its mix of platforming and combat. And where Zelda flourishes in its rising tension towards a boss, here the pacing is sluggish, and the mechanical golems sometimes don’t even fight. ARY AND THE SECRET OF SEASONS MAP PLUSA lack of map and unreliable controls don’t help, plus platforming sections are made needlessly difficult by a floaty jump and no character shadow to assess positioning. Combined, there are some tricky puzzles, though they’re less complexly designed and more convoluted without clarity. Ary’s ability to wield the seasons might be stolen from Capcom’s Zelda title, but it has some interesting (if simple) implementation: from vanishing water levels to climbable vines and icy platforms appearing in mid-air. It’s in the dungeons that the game does show some promise. ARY AND THE SECRET OF SEASONS MAP UPGRADEAn upgrade system also exists but is entirely missable. Worse, there is zero incentive to engage in combat, meaning 90% of the time it can be completely avoided. ![]() Combat, meanwhile, is a basic button-mashing affair against repeated enemies, though the musical feedback is a nice touch. Fetch quests are abundant and largely pointless: one in particular tasks you with finding a lost sheep, following waypoints only for the quest-giver to discover the sheep was right behind them all along. The game’s structure follows the typical Zelda template, but neither the overworld nor the dungeons live up to their potential. ![]()
